Four Truths

I have always contended that the Founder’s said a lot with very few words. What they said is sometimes overlooked by the average reader, including myself.

Here are the first two sentences of the second paragraph in the Declaration of Independence, can you pick out the four truths contained in them ?

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. – That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed…”

Here we go:

  1. All men are created equal
  2. Our rights come from God
  3. The purpose of government is to secure these God-given rights
  4. Governments gets it’s power from the PEOPLE

Look at how much these two sentences tells us about how the Founder’s thought. Understanding this information helps you to understand why they wrote the Constitution the way they did AND that they definitely meant the federal government to be strictly limited and restricted by the powers delegated to them in the Constitution.
