BBFL is excited to introduce the next phase in U.S. Constitutional education: Liberty Lessons.
These Liberty Lessons are available at no cost to you.
After participating in our U.S. Constitution Boot Camps, you may seek further insights from our Founding Fathers. BBFL has crafted lessons that delve deeper into subjects related to the U.S. Constitution and the ways in which we have diverged from our Founding Fathers’ vision. Our topics are timely and pertinent to the daily transgressions we witness. This session will review:
Living Out The Pursuit of Happiness
Amazingly, despite the decline in patriotism in America, many can still recite the key phrase describing our unalienable God given Rights to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. Our right to life if clear given the commandment, but the definition of liberty is less clear. And many today describe the pursuit of happiness as ‘doing whatever one is passionate about’. What exactly did the founders intend when they cited our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
In this Liberty Lesson, Mark Burrell unpacks the full meaning behind this phrase and the connection to the Freedom Americans enjoy when in fact these rights are protected. The answer reveals a much more profound concept associated with these rights. This perspective provides critical context as we seek to live in peace with our neighbor as intended with our national founding covenant, the Declaration of Independence.
Answering Common Misconceptions About The American Founding
One strategy the progressive movement has used to gain political momentum is to attack the ideas expressed and the founders themselves to undercut the legitimacy and modern relevance of our core founding principles. These attacks against the founders include things like:
- They were deists meaning the founders believed God was not directly involved in the affairs of mankind
- They were just trying to protect slavery and believed slaves were only 3/5ths of a person in the Constitution
- They believed in “separation of church & state” implying the church was prohibited from engaging in politics
- Jefferson rejected the Bible cutting out portions he did not agree with and writing his own
If any of these are true, it could undercut the force behind the founding principles and cast doubt on the motives of that generation. Unfortunately, many evangelical leaders not only accept these accusations by progressives, they openly repeat them to their congregations from the pulpit. This casts further doubt in the minds of Christians looking for Biblical answers to guide them in on their citizenship role as Christians.
In this Liberty Lesson, Mark provides compelling arguments showing each of these assertions to be false. Patriots need to be well versed and able to rebut these progressive attacks on the founding – especially Christians. Attend this lesson to learn how.
